The Pancake Race

One of the great traditions of the Oak Park Cross Country Team is the Pancake Race. More of a time trial than an actual race (though many will argue this), it's the great kick-off of the season where team captains choose groups, select themes, and after running a little over a mile in the heat, get to sit down to a large pancake breakfast both provided for and cooked by the parents.

This year Madeline was on Team Pop and earned the nickname of "Yonce" because "she wakes up like this" (meaning totally fabulous).

It's our second year participating and with all my heart, I believe that this is one of the reasons that this OPHS team is so amazing. Besides the fact that the cross country team is the most successful athletic program at the school, it's a group that feels so much like family. Everyone knows one another, and children, sibblings, parents, teachers and coaches work together to have the best time from season's beginning to end.

You would think there would be some sort of obsessiveness to lead to such a tigh-knit bond, but there isn't. It's just a large group of people who love their children and drink in the joy that this sport brings. Everyone works hard-both boys and girls, coaches and trainers. Their sucesses, though many, are hard earned.

We count our blessing with each season that we have such quality leaders and staff who care for and invest their time in our children. Their encouragement is what makes them work so hard, their confidence and support of each member is what makes the team come together so beautifully.
